Sundays. Back in college, it meant that it was time to sit down and finally do the homework assigned for Monday.
Well, I'm not in college any more, but on this particular Sunday I have a couple of things to read and accomplish on my computer. Looking outside, I'm toying with the idea of going to a library or coffee shop. But the thought of sitting in a hard chair and having to worry about leaving my things alone if I have to step away is not tempting.
Then a thought occurs: I wouldn't have to sit in a hard chair if there were libraries or cafe's that were dedicated to standing (and occasional sitting) room. Yes, the tables would have to adjust to different heights so taller people wouldn't get neck pain and shorter people wouldn't have to reach up too high. But gone would be the days of having to adjust your back, having to stretch your legs, or having to find that right position. Yes, sit down tables would still exist, but at least you would have a choice.
As for your laptop or backpack or purse, what if the table you are standing at comes equipped with a personal locker? It would be an extra expense for the operator of the facility, but it would be a one time expense in return for attracting people like me who are currently weighing the pros and cons of going out versus staying in the comfort of my home. Additionally, buying chairs for tables could be traded off for buying lockers! Voila, costs are at least breaking even already.
We could certainly add a tech component to this, but at its core it is a very simple innovation.
I would even like to think that because people would be standing while working, they would be taken to start dancing in order to get their energy up. Now, wouldn't that be wonderful: people dancing while working. Great way to multitask. Might even be an opportunity for a flash mob.
What's your perspective?
