As 2013 comes to an end, I would like to share with you my motto. I came up with it during my first semester of senior year of college. A light bulb had gone off and I realized that the path to law school had to be rebuilt in another direction, so it was time to start searching for jobs! While sitting in a cubicle in Lau Library, sorting through the priority of how I need to tackle midterms, job search, owning a company (that unfortunately had been going through organizational troubles since the start of the semester and it looked like I would have to cancel the lucrative negotiations for expansion because of not being able to find replacements), and a couple of other things, I realized that I had to develop a way to always remember the priorities of what what is important to me in life.
I enjoy picnics... and fine dining. I enjoy staycations... and vacations. I enjoy watching a movie at home... and going out to a show. At its foundation, this is what I mean by "Value Simplicity, Vie for the Sky." As you grow, and become increasingly more successful (yes, I know successful is a relative term), stay true to who you were and what you enjoyed before having the leisure to indulge in all life's "pleasures." I have seen it happen too often... and you may have too... so I developed this saying as a security switch to guide me in the future.
In 2011, I knew that 2012 would carry with it many changes. And that assumption held true! Graduate college, get a new job, move to a new city, meet new people... then 2013 came around with even more changes! 2014 promises to be the grandest year of them all as I have some pretty big goals to reach! That is the other branch of what I mean by "Value Simplicity, Vie for the Sky:" value the simplicity of life, but set your goals so that you can challenge yourself to continue growing and being better than you were the day/ month/ year prior. And by 'challenge yourself,' I mean compete with yourself. Just because someone else accomplished X or bought Y or got into Z program does not mean you have to do it just because they did. Make sure you're setting down a goal path because it is what you desire, what is best for you at the time, and what will make you a better person. (I played Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball from 7th - 12th grades and continued with a little Basketball and Volleyball in college, so I know about competition! But in the game of life, compete with yourself to keep yourself on the right path).
So for 2014, set your goals, create your action plans, plan your vacations, get a new job, take some classes, do whatever it is that you do! Through it all, remember to Value Simplicity, and Vie for the Sky!
That's just my perspective!
